3 Ways I’d Change Up My Style in 2025 (From a NYC & Online Stylist)

After 15 years as a personal stylist in the fashion jungle that is NYC, I’ve seen it all—trends, fads, and everything in between. But now, as we head into 2025, I’m thinking of switching things up a bit. If I were to refresh my own wardrobe this year, here are 3 ways I’d do it!

1. Curate a Vision

First things first: You gotta know what you like before you start shopping! I’d head straight to Pinterest or Google Photos and start pinning/saving everything that catches my eye. This isn’t about following trends—it's about figuring out what speaks to me. Once I have my vision, I can shop with intention, avoiding those random impulse buys that never really work together. Trust me, freeballing it just leads to a chaotic wardrobe!

Visuals And Ideas What to Pin:

  • Minimalist 'Quiet Luxury' outfits (think monochrome or simple lines)

  • Street-style looks for everyday outfits (layering pieces, oversized jackets)

  • Classic capsule wardrobe items to wear often (neutral color schemes, versatile basics)

  • Bold statement pieces that reflect your personality (fun accessories or colorful shoes)

  • Vintage inspiration like the 70's (throwback looks, or eye-catching silhouettes)

  • Workwear wardrobes that suit your dress code (formal CEO-style to sophisticated casual)

2. Make a List, Shop Smart

Now that I have my vision, it’s time to get started. I’d make a list of what I actually need to recreate the looks I found (basics, statement pieces, etc.)

Professional Personal Stylist Tips:

  • Orders tons of different brands and styles to find the perfect fit, not your go-to's.

  • Shop by category, not the entire store.

  • Always check product descriptions or labels! Go for 50% natural fibers or more, and thank me later when your stuff feels better and lasts longer.

  • Try on more than you think. Comparison will help determine winners and why!

Examples of Wardrobe Categories to Shop By:

  • Basics: Plain tees, tank tops, fitted sweaters, denim jeans

  • Outerwear: Tailored coats, denim jackets, leather jackets, blazers

  • Statement Pieces: Bold patterned shirts, leather pants, printed scarves

  • Footwear: Classic boots, sleek sneakers, versatile heels

  • Accessories: Leather bags, chunky necklaces, silk scarves, hats, sunglasses

3. Spend More, Keep Less

For a solid, long-lasting wardrobe that’ll stand the test of time, I’d spend a bit more upfront (think $3-5k for basics that last 5-7 years).

Yes, it may sound like a lot, but it’s worth it. And it's possible. I'll explain how.

I still wear a leather jacket I bought for $800 over 11 years ago!! That’s the what timeless style is we’re talking about!

These are all examples of items that might cost a bit more but will become staples in your wardrobe because they’ll last for half a decade or longer and always look polished.

  • Well-made, real wool coat (no crappy blends thanks) in a neutral shades like camel or navy. It will see me through chilly seasons for many years.

  • High-quality denim jeans that are at least 98% cotton make me feel hot everytime I wear them.

  • A pair of real leather boots (including the soles) that conform to my foot and are reparable

  • A luxurious cashmere sweater that keeps me warm (even when it's ice cold out) and feels delicious on my skin.

  • Buying less, but better means you're also being more sustainable because you're buying less.

So, spend smart, and in the long run, you'll save both money and time, not to mention the satisfaction of knowing you’ve got a wardrobe that’s as durable as it is stylish.
