Crack the Fashion Dress Code: Midsize Style

You would think something as basic as your size would be simple.

But we all know women's sizing is a mess.

It's inconsistent from store to store. From brand to brand. Even from year to year within the same brand! I've seen it year after year in my styling business.

It's frustrating and infuriating and overwhelming for all.

No wonder shopping can be such a stressful chore. (Of course, a stylist can help you navigate all the numbers, no matter your size!)

And now there's midsized.

If you can't find anything in a standard or straight-size store that makes you feel fabulous, but the plus-size store isn't quite right, you may be midsize.

Defining Midsize: what does midsize mean?

Midsize typically ranges from sizes 10 to 16 in the US (14 to 20 in the UK), perched between standard and plus sizes.

This range represents a diverse body shape that doesn't always find its match on the traditional size spectrum. It's for those of us who've felt stuck in a limbo where neither the smaller nor the larger sizes seem to fit just right.

For instance, if a size 14 is a little snug, but a 14W is a bit baggy, you may be midsize.

If you feel overlooked by fashion retailers and have to try on a variety of sizes, you may be midsize.

(Or, you know, you may just be a normal human.) Btw, you're not the problem, ya know that right?

What exactly is this buzzy category? Let's crack the fashion code.

How to Make Being Midsize Work for You

1. Know Your Measurements

Understanding your body's measurements is crucial for every size.

It’s not just about knowing your size; it’s about knowing your shape and dimensions.

And how to read a sizing chart.

Make informed decisions when shopping, ensuring a flattering fit that complements your midsize figure!

Start with the basics: bust, waist, and hips. Cross-reference the measurements with the size chart for each brand before you proceed to purchase to get a sense of how the item will fit.

2. Find Midsize Friendly Clothing Brands

Many brands now offer clothes to the midsize market, offering collections that cater specifically to and include sizes 10-16. Research, experiment, and seek out these brands. They're designing with your body in mind, blending style with the right fit.

Below are a few of our favorites. (Keep in mind, not all are designed strictly for midsized body shapes, but they do offer your range of stylish sizes.

3. Invest in Key Pieces

Focus on quality over quantity. Always.

When you buy clothing, plan to keep it as long as possible and to wear it frequently. By investing in staple pieces that can be mixed and matched you're building a luxurious, versatile, and timeless wardrobe.

Over time, your wardrobe is filled with things you love and enjoy wearing regularly and you save from spending money on things that you just kinda like.

Look for well-made pieces that will last rather than fast-fashion acrylics. Natural fibers like cotton, wool, silk, and linen last longer and wear better than synthetic fabrics. Look for signs of well-made construction. For example: quality items will have tight, straight stitches -- and lots of them.

4. Make Tailoring Your Clothes Your Bestie

Off-the-rack clothes are made to fit the brand's standard sizes, but your body is anything but standard. Companies use fit models to make clothes proportional and cut patterns for mass construction, and your body may not have the proportions of that model.

That's okay! And NORMAL! And it's true for all sizes!

Tailoring can transform an okay fit into a perfect one. A little nip here and a tuck there can make all the difference, making each piece perfectly proportioned and uniquely yours.

Pro Tip: Find something that fits the biggest part of your body and then tailor the rest.

5. Play with Proportions

Mastering the art of proportion is key to styling a midsize body. Balance is everything.

And don't forget the 2/3 rule (you can read more about it in my blog post there and other secrets to dressing proportionately to balance your outfits)!

6. Don't Shy Away from Color and Pattern

Midsize fashion is not about hiding; it's about shining. Isn't all fashion meant to make you feel good?

Bold colors, striking patterns, and playful textures all work beautifully on a midsize frame. Wear what makes you happy and what reflects your personality. Don't let your shape or stupid fashion rules about what you can or can't wear keep you from things you love!

7. Embrace Online Midsize Communities

You're not alone on this fashion journey. Online communities and social media platforms are brimming with midsize fashion influencers and everyday fashionistas sharing their finds, fits, and styling tips. Engage, learn, and even share your own experiences.

Find midsize content creators who have a look you want for yourself. Start by choosing a few items they wear that you love and find a version that works for you. Seeing people who look like you dressing confidently is a great way to boost embracing your shape!
